Law of new food material GABA

GABA was approved as new food material in No.12 Bulletin in 2009 by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China on September 27, 2009. New food material GABA is produced from fermentation technique of Lactobacillus hilgardii with L-sodium glutamate as raw material with the following processing steps, including pasteurization, cooling, activated carbon filtration, spray drying steps. This kind of GABA can be used in beverages, cocoa products, chocolate and chocolate products, candies, baked goods, puffed foods. However, GABA produced by chemical synthesis and fermentation of Escherichia coli are not allowed as food because it contains harmful substances to human body, even though their purities are higher than that of new food material GABA. Otherwise, it is illegal.
